Overdue Update!

Although I haven't posted in quite a while, the Arts and Crafts Series has been keeping busy with lots of workshops. We hosted a pottery painting workshop at the Carnegie Art Center; made holiday cards in December, and so far in 2009 have hosted clock decorating, t-shirt stenciling, and canvas collaging. On the business side, we've been interviewing candidates for next year's coordinators since Aakanksha and I will be graduating! I hope everyone is having a wonderful spring break! Any special crafts in the works? I'll try and post some event pictures this week!

Earring Extravaganza!

On Saturday afternoon, the Arts and Crafts Series hosted the very popular earring making workshop. Twelve of us whitties got together and made some stunning stuff. Click here too view the photos. If you are interested in continuing this craft on your own, you can buy a set of tools at the local Joann's for about $10 dollars. Joann's has a moderate selection of beads and for an even better deal you can also buy beads online. Fire Mountain Gems is a great online source for buying beads, learning new techniques, and seeing the latest designs in the industry. They even offer free online tutorials! I'm already a big fan of the site.

Scrabble Tile Success

Saturday's Scrabble Tile Pendant workshop was great. It is amazing what a little diamond glaze can do! We took ordinary scrabble tiles (buy them in bulk here), decorated them with pretty paper, applied diamond glaze, and then attached a bail and strung it on a necklace. It is so simple and it looks very expensive and professional. And the secret is all in the diamond glaze! However, I just checked the internet and every online provider (four stores that I know of) is OUT of diamond glaze. We bought 3 bottles a week ago from Joanns.com. Maybe we got the last ones? Anyways, I am just shocked about this and I wonder if it because of the scrabble tile pendant craze going on right now and maybe people are stocking up and hoarding diamond glaze to make holiday gifts. Seriously! Scrabble tile pendants are selling for $7 to $10 EACH on etsy.com and ebay.

For this event, we had about 50 people RSVP. Yes, 5-0! Because of the huge response, we are hosting a second workshop this Sunday (and it's already full too!)

Student Activities Fair: Superheroes

We had a great time at the Student Activities Fair yesterday. Thank you to all who came out and visited our tables. In keeping with the overall theme of Superheroes, we set up a craft table for students to write and decorate a postcard for their real life superheroes. There were hero letters to moms and pops, friends at other colleges, international relatives, and even some local notes that will be sent through campus mail. After a busy day of crafting, over 60 postcards were made and we plan to get them in the mail by Thursday. And perhaps most exciting, 110 people signed up for the Arts and Crafts Series listserv--now that is a community of crafters!
